This will be our last bulletin of 2019. It’s been quite a year – in more ways than one.

Whilst the will we/won’t we Brexit debate stole every column inch of newsprint and social media platform, culminating in a general election last week, the Feisty Women Trustees have been quietly working together on the way forward - pursuing our objectives of improving the dysfunctional equalities culture in the UK.

To that end, we’ve approached the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to request a meeting. We are asking them to use their considerable powers to look at DWP’s failure to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) which in turn may eventually mean the Equality Act needs to be amended. We will offer our assistance along with the evidence we have uncovered as proof it needs to be looked at, in the light of recent issues, including the unfair changes to state pension age for women. We know it is within the remit of the EHRC to investigate the conduct of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) over the PSED and Feisty Women will be pushing for a meeting early in 2020.

In other exciting news we have started a Supporters Corner on our website and are delighted to have our first big message of support from adopted Dundonian and TV celebrity presenter, Lorraine Kelly – self-professed Feisty Woman. A big thank you to Lorraine for her kind words - please read her feisty message of support on the homepage.

Not long now until our second annual conference, which will be held at Discovery Point, overlooking the splendid new V&A Dundee Museum on the city’s thriving waterfront development. The keynote speaker will be Christina McKelvie MSP, Minister for Equalities and Older People and delegates will be able to ask the Minister questions about the Scottish Government’s view of our campaign and how they may be able to support us. We’re thrilled that our conference will also be the launch event for the 2020 Dundee Women’s Festival.

Leader of Dundee City Council John Alexander will open the event and special guest, renowned Scottish folk singer, Sheena Wellington, will perform for us. A further treat is in store for those of you who have never seen Dundee’s own The Ovarian Cysters - you are in for a treat to round off the morning!

A small brunch is included in the £10 ticket price along with a free visit to the five-star award winning RRS Discovery and Visitor Centre (usual ticket price £11.50) afterwards if you so wish – what a bargain! To book, please search Eventbrite for FEISTY WOMEN MAKING WAVES conference, which will be live after the holiday break.

Our fabulous Feisty Women Trustees wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year - hope to see you at conference in 2020!
